Roxel is an Anglo-French Company that designs, develops and manufactures a range of solid propellant rocket motors for use in tactical missiles. Its operations are spread across several sites in the UK and France and it has an annual turnover of about £250M and nearly 1000 staff, with 300 in the UK.

 

The UK operations are entirely based at Summerfield, Kidderminster where we now have a requirement for a Senior Propulsion Engineer.

 

The successful candidate will be the performance technical authority for several Rocket Motor products. Specific areas of work will initially include internal ballistics which is used to predict, verify and analyse the performance of Rocket Motors. There is potential to expand into other areas of numerical simulation such as computational fluid dynamics, thermal and stress analysis of Rocket Motor propellant charges and structures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Prediction of Rocket Motor performance using a variety of numerical modelling methods.
• Concepting and Design of new Rocket Motor systems which will involve engagement with external stakeholders and potential customers.
• Design and optimisation of Propellant Charge grains using in-house tools.
• Performance technical authority for multiple Rocket Motor systems, presenting to and informing customers related to Rocket Motor performance.
• Supporting project technical decisions related to the performance of Rocket Motor systems.
• Analysis of the performance of Rocket Motor firing trials and assessment of these experimental results against performance requirements.
• Leadership on research programmes investigating new advances in Rocket Motor technology and/or Modelling methodologies.
• Peer review of others’ work, related to Rocket Motor design.
• The generation of, and contributions to, documents that support the qualification and delivery of Rocket Motors.
• Mentorship of junior colleagues in numerical simulation and/or Rocket Motor design.

Experience and Background

Qualification:

 

Essential Qualifications
o Educated to degree level in Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace or other related disciplines.

 

Desirable Qualifications
o MSc or PhD withing a numerical modelling related field.

 

Experience:

 

Essential Experience
o Minimum of 5 years working within a numerical modelling related field.
o Understanding of the basic principles of fluid dynamics and numerical simulation.
o Proficiency with either Python, Matlab or another programming language for generating scripts and analysing data.
o Proficiency with the Microsoft office package, particularly Word, Excel and Access.

 

Desirable Experience
o Experience or knowledge in Solid Rocket Motor design is considered advantageous.
o Experience using commercial Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software such as ANSYS Fluent.
o Previous experience mentoring junior colleagues or manging a small team would be considered advantageous.
